Human Rights for Bicycle Users 27/9/2010

There are some streets that are so dangerous for cyclists that they are a human rights issue.  The right to freedom of movement, for example, is given to us in the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities.  Here's the beginnings of a list of these places:

  • Flinders Street.  Too dangerous to ride on, but illegal to ride on the footpath.
  • Other streets in the CBD: ditto.  Including Lonsdale St, Exhibition Street, Russell Street, Queen Street, King Street, Spencer Street.
  • Kings Way
  • QueensBridge
  • Haymarket roundabout.  This is the very large roundabout at the top of Elizabeth St, and at the City end of Royal Parade and Flemington Road
  • St Kilda Road - the bike lanes are death traps.  The State Government has been blocking the City of Melbourne's master plan for St Kilda Road for over two years.
