City approaches  18/6/2010

Many bike lanes that approach the City do not get there.  Examples include:
  • Royal Pde and Flemington Rd lanes that stop at the Haymarket roundabout,
  • Albert St lanes don't reach Nicholson St,
  • Queensbridge St lanes don't reach the Yarra paths,
  • Port Melbourne path along the former Port Melbourne railway line stop at Clarendon St.
Many of these problems are laid at the State Government's door, over which the City has no control.  Some routes into the City do connect, for example:
  • St Kilda Rd lanes cross the Yarra (but see Sam's comment, below),
  • The Yarra River paths connect to St Kilda Rd, (sort of)
  • the Rathdowne St lanes reach into the City as far as LaTrobe St, and
  • Footscray Rd sort of connects to the City via the Latrobe St and Collins St bridges (both of which are too steep for most cyclists however).
  • Swanston St (north) segregated lanes reach Latrobe St.
Cr Clarke recently (June 2010)  spoke to docklands news about improving the Footscray Rd connection by taking it away from the waterfront and aligning it alongside the railway lines.  This alignment is also shown in the draft Municipal Structure Statement.
